Istria
and its inhabitants have always been oriented to the sea since the coastline is
469.5 kilometers long. The sea that laments the Istrian coast on three
sides is known today as one of the most beautiful and cleanest in the world.
At the beginning of May, a regular sea quality test begins on Croatian beaches.
Tests are performed every 15 days and the results are published
regularly. In Istria, the sea is sampled on 203 beaches, and previous
analyzes have shown that the sea is of high quality.
Based on many years of experience in testing the sanitary quality of the sea on
beaches, internal criteria for sea assessment have been introduced according to
which the sea is assessed in four types, which are marked with four colors:
high quality sea (blue), sea suitable for swimming (green), moderately
polluted sea (yellow color) and more heavily polluted sea (red color).
These criteria were introduced precisely with the aim of distinguishing
and highlighting areas with very clean sea.
The appearance of the sea, transparency, waste products, mineral fats are
important in the assessment, and the pH value and temperature are also taken
into account. The quality of the sea on the beaches on the entire
Adriatic coast and island area has been monitored since 1988.
